The rules of poker hands ranking are simple, as is the classification of hands. There are a total of 10 types of hands you can have. These hands are ranked top to bottom of the Royal Flush on the highest card.
If you’re looking for advice on which hands you should and should not play, take a look at our starting hand guide, which includes another checklist.
You’ve probably heard the old saying, “It takes a day to learn how to play poker, but it takes a lifetime to master it.” Indeed, it takes a lot of practice and experience to improve your online poker game. However, with the right learning strategy and good advice, it will take a lot less time to improve even if you have never played it.
In Texas Hold’em, the most popular form of poker, the origin of the cards does not matter. You can make a hand using the two cards in your hand and three community cards, one card in your hand and four community cards or with the five community cards. It goes without saying that if you play a hand that includes the five community cards, your opponent will have at least the same hand as you and maybe better.
In Pot Limit Omaha, the rule is very different. Be sure to read our guide and watch the Pot Limit Omaha video for more information.
Basic order of cards in poker
Poker follows the same basic order like most other card games. The highest card is the Ace, followed by the King, the Queen and the Jack. From there, the numbers go down from 10 to 2. This means that a pair of Aces is greater than a pair of Kings and that a set of Jacks will beat a set of 7.
The highest card is decisive in the case of a straight or a flush
If you have the same hand as an opponent, for example, a straight, the one with the highest card wins the hand. Thus, a straight which goes from 10 to the Ace beats a straight which goes from 9 to the King. The same goes for all other hands where 2 players have the same combination.
The highest cards complete the hand
If the hand does not use five cards, for example, if you play a square, the last card is the highest card that is available. This can be a card in your hand or a community card. The same goes for two pairs and one pair.
